Everything You Need to Know About Impetigo

Impetigo is a common, superficial, bacterial skin infection characterized by honey-colored crusted scabs and open sores. At times, it can be a blistering rash.  It affects the superficial layers of the skin and is typically caused by Staph and less commonly, Strep.  It is easily treated by a dermatologist if recognized early.

Symptoms:

In general, impetigo is a mild infection that can occur anywhere on the body. It most often affects exposed skin, such as the nose, mouth, arms, or legs. Symptoms include red, painful,  itchy sores that break open and leak a clear fluid or pus, followed by crusty yellow or “honey-colored” scab that form over the sores.

Risk factors:

  • Skin conditions: eczema, contact dermatitis, scabies, chickenpox
  • Skin trauma: lacerations, insect bites, thermal burns, abrasions
  • Immunosuppression
  • Warm, humid climate
  • Age 2-5 years old
  • Group settings (schools, daycares, military training facilities etc).
  • Poor personal hygiene

Complications:

Usually, impetigo is easily treated with antibiotics. However, very rarely, impetigo complications can include wider spread infection, such as cellulitis, lymphangitis, and bacteraemia (bacteria in the blood). Sometimes the skin sores heal with a darker mark on the skin that can last for months, even after the sores are healed.

Treatment:

  • Topical antibiotics (rubbed onto the skin sores).
  • Oral antibiotics (taken by mouth).

Prevention:

There are no vaccines to prevent impetigo, but there are things you can do to help protect yourself and others.

  • Clean and care for skin wounds
  • Wash your hands and laundry often
  • Avoid contact with infected persons
